Britannia
Britannia is one of Calgary's smallest and most exclusive city-centre estate communities, a roughly 0.6-square-kilometre pocket in the southwest framed by Elbow Drive, the Elbow River, 50 Avenue SW, and Glenmore Trail SW. It sits among the Elbow River corridor's most established addresses, sharing edges with Elboya, Elbow Park, Mayfair, and Bel-Aire.
Developer F.C. Lowes laid out Britannia in the mid-1950s as a premium enclave, and that intent still shows: wide, gently curved streets, generous 50-foot-plus lots, mature tree canopy, and royal-themed street names such as Coronation Drive. Fewer than a thousand residents live here, which keeps turnover low and demand high.
With homes routinely trading above $2 million and an average sale price near $3,050,000, Britannia ranks among Calgary's priciest neighbourhoods and its tightest infill markets — a place where lots, not just houses, are the scarce asset.
The Elbow River defines Britannia's western edge, and the paved Elbow River Pathway links the community directly to Sandy Beach and River Park — a favourite for wading, picnics, and cycling. The shared River Park / Sandy Beach off-leash area and the nearby Elboya off-leash zone give dogs room to roam, while mature boulevards and quiet cul-de-sacs make the whole neighbourhood walkable.
The Elboya-Britannia-Windsor Park Community Association anchors local recreation and events for the area. Commuting is quick: Elbow Drive and 4 Street SW run straight into the Beltline and downtown core in minutes, Glenmore Trail SW connects east-west across the city, and Chinook and the CTrain Red Line are a short drive south, making Britannia one of the best-connected estate communities in Calgary.
Britannia Plaza, at Elbow Drive and 49 Avenue SW, is the community's own boutique retail hub — Sunterra Market for groceries and prepared food, Starbucks, Village Ice Cream, Britannia Wine Merchants, and Native Tongues Taqueria for tacos and mezcal on the patio. Larger shopping at Chinook Centre and the restaurants of Mission and 4 Street SW are only a few minutes away.
