Currie Barracks
Currie Barracks is a master-planned new-urbanism community in Calgary's city centre, built on the grounds of the former Canadian Forces Base Calgary and named for General Sir Arthur Currie. It sits bounded by 33 Avenue SW to the north, Flanders Avenue and Lakeview Drive to the south, Crowchild Trail to the east, and Sarcee Trail to the west, roughly ten minutes from downtown.
Developed by Canada Lands Company as the final phase of a transformation that produced Garrison Woods (1996) and Garrison Green (2006), Currie converts an 80-hectare military base into a dense, walkable urban village. The plan drew on new-urbanism design principles and earned a Congress for the New Urbanism Charter Award, and heritage touchpoints like the Officers' Mess and Garrison Square anchor the streetscape.
As one of Canada's largest inner-city redevelopments, Currie holds a distinct position in Calgary's market: a still-building community where new construction, walkability, and proximity to Mount Royal University and Marda Loop command a premium over conventional suburbs.
Green space is built into Currie's plan. Alexandria Park anchors the community with woodland exercise loops, a dog park, and a splash-and-skating feature, while Valour Park, Garrison Square, and the historic Officers' Garden offer smaller gathering spots. Regional pathways connect residents toward the Glenmore Reservoir, North Glenmore Park, and the wider Calgary bikeway network for cycling and running.
The Currie Barracks, Lincoln Park and Rutland Park community association programs local recreation and events. Commuting is straightforward: Crowchild Trail and Sarcee Trail bound the community and feed Glenmore Trail and downtown, while Calgary Transit bus routes serve the area and connect to the CTrain network. Mount Royal University sits directly south, adding campus recreation and library access within walking distance.
Marda Loop, one of Calgary's most active inner-city shopping districts, sits just east across Crowchild Trail with independent cafes, pubs, and specialty retailers. Within Currie itself, The Inn on Officers' Garden and its Dining Room serve locally sourced cuisine, and Veranda at The Stables pairs food with Vaycay Brew Co and Burwood Distillery. Westhills Towne Centre to the southwest covers big-box shopping and everyday essentials.
