    THE STORY

Parkdale is a mature northwest inner-city community on the north bank of the Bow River, bounded by the river to the south, 28 Street NW to the east, Shaganappi Trail NW to the west, and 16 Avenue NW to the north. It sits directly between West Hillhurst and Point McKay, a few minutes from downtown Calgary along Memorial Drive and within walking distance of the Foothills Medical Centre, the Alberta Children's Hospital, and the University of Calgary.

The community was annexed to Calgary in 1910 as the "Parkdale Addition," planned as a streetcar-era enclave for the city's professional class. The First World War stalled construction, and most of Parkdale filled in after 1948 with modest bungalows. Since the 2000s those postwar cottages have steadily given way to architect-designed infills, giving the streets a mix of heritage brick, mid-century character, and contemporary builds.

Today Parkdale is one of Calgary's most sought-after riverfront addresses, prized for its Bow River frontage, mature tree canopy, and rare combination of quiet residential streets with genuine walkability to hospitals, campus, and the core.

    OUTSIDE

The Bow River riverfront runs the full length of Parkdale and anchors its outdoor life, connecting into the regional Bow River Pathway for cycling, running, and riverside walks. Pedestrian bridges link the community to Edworthy Park and its off-leash areas across the water, while Parkdale Plaza, the Parkdale/West Hillhurst playground, and nearby Shouldice Park and Athletic Park round out the recreation close to home.

    AMENITIES

The Parkdale Community Association runs a hall, community garden, and seasonal programming for residents. Commuting is straightforward: Memorial Drive and 16 Avenue NW (the Trans-Canada) frame the community, with Shaganappi Trail and Crowchild Trail providing quick routes to downtown, the University of Calgary, Market Mall, and Highway 1 toward the Rocky Mountains. The Foothills and Children's Hospital campuses are minutes away.

    SHOP & DINE

Angel's Cappuccino & Ice Cream Cafe sits just across the river in Edworthy Park, a longtime local landmark for coffee and treats along the pathway. Everyday shopping and dining are minutes away in West Hillhurst and the shops and restaurants of Kensington, while Market Mall to the northwest and the University District's grocers, cafes, and cinema add major-brand retail and dining within a short drive.
