Ramsay
Ramsay is an inner-city community in Calgary's southeast, set on the high ground east of the Elbow River and Macleod Trail, directly above the Stampede grounds and the Scotiabank Saddledome and immediately south of Inglewood. It is one of Calgary's oldest neighbourhoods, and it still reads that way: Spiller Road, the community's spine, follows the route of an original First Nations trail, and Scotsman's Hill on its western edge once supplied the sandstone for many of Calgary's historic buildings.
The Ramsay name dates to 1956, when the older enclaves of Burnsland, Brewery Flats, Grandview and Mills Estate consolidated under one identity, honouring early land agent William Thomson Ramsay. Workers' cottages built beside the CPR yards, the Calgary Brewery and the stockyards gave the area its Edwardian and Queen Anne Revival character, much of it intact today. That heritage fabric, walkable scale and downtown-adjacent location have made Ramsay one of the city centre's most sought-after addresses, with an average sale price on file of $1,371,368.
The west edge of Ramsay is defined by Scotsman's Hill, the escarpment lookout that delivers panoramic downtown and Stampede-grounds views and includes a roughly three-acre off-leash dog area. Ramsay Park adds a playground, picnic space and tennis courts, and the community connects to the Elbow River and Bow River pathway network for walking, running and cycling straight into downtown and out toward Pearce Estate Park.
The active Ramsay Community Association anchors local life and events. Commuting is a genuine advantage: downtown is a short drive or cycle across the Elbow River, with Macleod Trail, Blackfoot Trail and Deerfoot Trail all at the community's doorstep. The planned Ramsay/Inglewood Green Line LRT station will link the neighbourhood directly to the wider transit network, adding to existing bus service including the Route 1 into the core.
Ramsay's everyday shopping and dining sit next door on Inglewood's 9th Avenue SE, one of Calgary's best independent main streets, lined with boutiques, antique dealers, art galleries, cafes and destination restaurants. The local brewery and coffee scene runs deep, from Cold Garden and High Line Brewing to Rosso Coffee Roasters, and the seasonal Inglewood Night Market brings artisan vendors, food trucks and live music within an easy walk of Ramsay's streets.
