Inglewood
Inglewood is Calgary's oldest neighbourhood, founded in 1875 across the Elbow River from Fort Calgary and predating the city itself. It sits in the city centre, wrapped by the Bow River to the north and east, the Inglewood Wildlands and rail corridor to the south, and the Elbow River and 6 Street SE to the west, with the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary anchoring its eastern edge. Ninth Avenue SE runs through its heart as one of Calgary's original main streets.
Once the settlement's trade and rail hub, Inglewood declined through the mid-twentieth century, then rebounded into the arts, culture, and design district it is today. A heritage-protected main street, century homes, and a walkable independent commercial strip give it a texture no newer community can replicate.
The result is one of Calgary's most sought-after inner-city addresses. Homes here trade at a premium to the city as a whole, with an average sale price on file of $886,221, reflecting both restored character houses and high-end infill construction minutes from downtown.
Green space defines the community. The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary offers roughly two kilometres of trails and more than 270 recorded bird species, while the adjacent Inglewood Wildlands and Pearce Estate Park add reclaimed grasslands, ponds, and interpretive paths. The paved Bow River Pathway runs along the northern edge, linking cyclists and runners into Calgary's regional network and across to Fort Calgary and the East Village.
The Inglewood Community Association, founded in 1956, runs programs, events, and a community garden, and maintains a hall and rink for residents. Commuting is straightforward: downtown is minutes across the Elbow River via 9th Avenue SE, with Blackfoot Trail, Deerfoot Trail, and Memorial Drive putting the rest of the city within easy reach. The under-construction Green Line LRT will further improve inner-city transit access.
Ninth Avenue SE is Inglewood's commercial spine and one of Calgary's best independent shopping streets. Retail runs from Smithbilt Hats and Silk Road Spice Merchant to The Next Page bookstore and specialty design shops. Dining is a genuine draw: Rouge and Deane House in heritage buildings, The Nash, Spolumbo's in a 1906 firehouse, plus the time-capsule Blackfoot Truckstop Diner and a growing roster of cafes and vegan spots.
