Discovery Ridge
Discovery Ridge is a southwest Calgary community set along the banks of the Elbow River on the city's western edge. It is bordered by Griffith Woods to the south, Highway 8 and Discovery Ridge Way SW to the north, Sarcee Trail to the east, and Discovery Ridge Boulevard to the west. Its defining feature is Griffith Woods Park, a 93-hectare natural environment park of mature white spruce forest and wetlands, once the Griffith family homestead and donated to the City of Calgary in 2000.
Established in the 1990s and largely built out through the 2000s, Discovery Ridge grew as a low-density forested enclave rather than a dense suburb. It is one of the few Calgary neighbourhoods where estate lots back directly onto protected parkland, and it sits among the city's sought-after west communities alongside Springbank Hill, West Springs, and Aspen Woods.
With detached homes trading well above the citywide average and a limited, tightly held inventory, Discovery Ridge holds a firm position in Calgary's luxury west-side market.
Griffith Woods Park anchors outdoor life here, with paved and natural pathways winding through white spruce forest and wetlands along the Elbow River. Residents walk, run, and cycle a connected trail network, spot deer and songbirds year-round, and reach the wider Elbow River pathway system directly from the community. Three golf courses and the Rocky Mountain foothills sit within a short drive west.
The Discovery Ridge Community Association supports local events and green space, while the nearby Westside Recreation Centre offers pools, rinks, and fitness facilities. Commuters reach the rest of Calgary quickly via Stoney Trail, Glenmore Trail, Sarcee Trail, 69 Street SW, and Bow Trail, with downtown roughly 15 to 18 minutes away. Calgary Transit routes connect the community to the west-side network.
Everyday shopping and dining sit minutes north and east. West 85th in West Springs gathers more than forty local restaurants, cafes, pubs, and services, while Aspen Landing offers upscale boutiques and grocery. Signal Hill Centre and West Hills add big-box retail, grocers, and national chains, and Aspen Woods and West Springs provide additional restaurants and professional services within a short drive.
