St. Andrews Heights
St. Andrews Heights is a small inner-city community in Calgary's northwest, laid out in 1953 on the escarpment above West Hillhurst and named for the famous golf links at St. Andrews, Scotland. It sits between the Trans-Canada Highway (16 Avenue NW) to the north, Crowchild Trail to the east, Toronto Crescent to the south, and 29 Street to the west, with the Bow River valley falling away just below.
The location is the community's defining asset. Foothills Medical Centre and the Alberta Children's Hospital anchor the northwest corner, the University of Calgary sits a short walk west, and McMahon Stadium and Foothills Athletic Park border the northeast. With roughly 1,600 residents across about 645 homes, it remains one of the northwest's more tightly held enclaves.
Elevated lots deliver downtown skyline views to the east and open prairie sunsets to the west, a combination that keeps St. Andrews Heights firmly in Calgary's luxury inner-city market alongside neighbours like Parkdale, Briar Hill, and Hounsfield Heights.
St. Andrews Park sits at the community's centre with playgrounds, sports fields, and one of the city's best tobogganing hills. The escarpment edge opens onto the Bow River Pathway, which connects west to Edworthy Park and Bowmont Park and east toward downtown and Prince's Island. Confederation Park and the running track and fields at Foothills Athletic Park are also close at hand.
The St. Andrews Heights Community Association runs the local hall, rink, and neighbourhood events. Crowchild Trail and the Trans-Canada Highway (16 Avenue NW) put the rest of the city within easy reach, and the University and Banff Trail CTrain stations on the Red Line offer a quick transit ride downtown or to the airport corridor. Foothills Medical Centre and the University of Calgary are effectively at the doorstep.
Everyday shopping is minutes away at North Hill Centre and along 16 Avenue NW, while Market Mall, one of Calgary's largest, is a short drive up Shaganappi Trail with Winners, Safeway, cinemas, and restaurants including The Keg and Milestones. Neighbourhood favourites like The Lazy Loaf & Kettle sit close by, and the cafes, pubs, and boutiques of Kensington are a quick trip across the river.
