    THE STORY

Chaparral occupies the far southeast corner of Calgary, framed by Macleod Trail to the west, 194 Avenue SE to the south, Highway 22X (Stoney Trail) to the north, and the Bow River valley to the east. Established in 1995 and named for the Mediterranean chaparral biome, the community splits into two distinct pockets: Lake Chaparral, built around a private 32-acre man-made lake, and Chaparral Valley, the newer enclave that steps down toward the Bow River and the eastern edge of Fish Creek Provincial Park.

The lake is the anchor. Residents hold private access for swimming, fishing, skating, and paddling, with a 21-acre park and beach house at the centre of daily life. That combination of a members-only lake, Fish Creek access, and Bow River frontage gives Chaparral a recreation-first identity that few Calgary suburbs match.

In the southeast market, Chaparral reads as an established family community with mature landscaping, priced below the inner-city lake communities of Lake Bonavista and Mahogany while offering comparable lake privileges. Its far-south position trades commute time for space, water, and greenery.

    OUTSIDE

Fish Creek Provincial Park's eastern reaches border the community, with Bow River pathways, Sikome Lake, and the Bow Valley Ranch all within reach. Lake Chaparral's private 32-acre lake and 21-acre park anchor year-round recreation, from fishing and swimming to skating. Blue Devil Golf Course sits just north across 22X, and the connected regional pathway system links Chaparral to Cranston and Walden.

    AMENITIES

The Lake Chaparral Residents Association operates the lake, beach house, and park, while the Chaparral Community Association runs programming for the wider neighbourhood. Commuters reach the rest of the city via Macleod Trail and Highway 22X (Stoney Trail), with the Somerset-Bridlewood C-Train station, the south terminus of the Red Line, a short drive west near Shawnessy for a car-free route downtown.

    SHOP & DINE

Everyday shopping centres on Shawnessy Shopping Centre to the west, home to Canadian Tire, Winners, Walmart, Best Buy, Shoppers Drug Mart, and grocery anchors, plus a range of casual restaurants and cafes. The Gates of Walden, just south of the community, adds pubs, cafes, a grocery store, and services within a few minutes' drive, and Macleod Trail's retail corridor extends the options north toward Midnapore and Sundance.
